Working Principle

Once the pneumatic input signal is received, the 3582 positioner modulates the supply pressure to the control valve actuator. It does this through a sophisticated internal mechanism. The positioner compares the received pneumatic input signal with the actual position feedback from the valve stem. Based on this comparison, it adjusts the supply pressure to the actuator. If the input signal indicates that the valve needs to open further, the positioner will increase the supply pressure to the actuator, causing the valve stem to move accordingly. Conversely, if the valve needs to close or move to a different position, the positioner will modulate the supply pressure appropriately. This modulation process ensures that the valve stem reaches and maintains an accurate position that is proportional to the pneumatic input signal. In a power generation plant, when the demand for steam flow changes, the control system sends a new pneumatic signal. TheSiemenspositioner then quickly modulates the supply pressure to the steam control valve actuator, precisely adjusting the valve position to meet the new flow requirements.

Closed - Loop Control Cycle

1.Signal Input: The positioner receives a 4 - 20 mA setpoint signal from the DCS/PLC, which is converted to a digital value by the A/D converter.
2.Position Sensing: The NCS detects the actual valve position (stroke or angle) and sends a feedback signal to the microprocessor.
3.Deviation Calculation: The microprocessor computes the difference between the setpoint and the actual position. If the deviation exceeds the deadband, it triggers a correction.
4.Piezo Valve Actuation: The microprocessor activates piezoelectric valves to adjust the air pressure to the actuator's two chambers. For double - acting actuators, one chamber is pressurized while the other is exhausted to drive the valve open or closed.
5.Feedback Loop: The positioner continuously monitors the valve position and adjusts the output pressure until the actual position matches the setpoint, ensuring precise control.

Double - Acting Actuator Control

1.Opening Stroke: The "open" piezoelectric valve increases pressure to the opening chamber, while the "close" valve exhausts the closing chamber, pushing the piston to open the valve.
2.Closing Stroke: The reverse action occurs, with pressure increased to the closing chamber and exhausted from the opening chamber, moving the piston to close the valve.
3.Hold Position: Both chambers are maintained at equal pressure to hold the valve in a fixed position, minimizing air consumption in steady state.
