Working Principle
The Rosemount 8600D Series Utility Vortex Flowmeter operates based on the vortex shedding principle. When a fluid flows past a bluff body (vortex generator) placed in the flow path, vortices are alternately shed from the downstream side of the bluff body. The frequency of vortex shedding is directly proportional to the velocity of the fluid.
The flowmeter contains a sensor that detects these vortices. As the vortices are shed, they create pressure fluctuations in the fluid. The sensor, which is often a piezoelectric or capacitance - based device, converts these pressure fluctuations into electrical signals. The electronics within the flowmeter then processes these electrical signals to determine the frequency of vortex shedding. By knowing the relationship between the vortex shedding frequency and the fluid velocity, as well as the geometry of the flowmeter, the flow rate of the fluid can be accurately calculated.
