The FMP50 operates on the principle of guided radar, also known as time - of - flight (ToF) radar. This technology is based on the fact that electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light. In the case of the FMP50, a high - frequency electromagnetic pulse is emitted from the transmitter. This pulse travels along a physical guide, which can be either a rod or a cable (depending on the application and the model of the FMP50), towards the surface of the liquid being measured.
When the pulse reaches the liquid surface, a part of the energy is reflected back towards the transmitter. The time it takes for the pulse to travel to the liquid surface and back is precisely measured. Since the speed of light is a known constant, the distance from the transmitter to the liquid surface can be calculated using the formula d=c×t/2, where d is the distance, c is the speed of light, and t is the time of flight. This measured distance is then used to determine the level of the liquid in the tank or vessel.
Once the reflected echo is received by the FMP50 transmitter, sophisticated signal - processing algorithms come into play. The transmitter is equipped with advanced electronics that can distinguish the true echo from the liquid surface from other spurious signals or echoes that may be caused by tank internals, such as agitators, baffles, or other obstructions.
The FMP50 uses a technique called multi - echo tracking. This involves analyzing multiple echoes received over time.

1.1 Probe Options
1.1.1 Rod Probes
The FMP50 offers rod probes as one of the options for level measurement.
