Fundamental Working Mechanism

The FTM50 features a tuning fork-shaped sensor (fork body) that is excited into resonant vibration by an internal piezoelectric drive. In the absence of bulk solids (empty condition), the fork vibrates at its natural resonant frequency, typically determined by the sensor's material properties, geometry, and mechanical design. When the fork comes into contact with the bulk solid material (filled condition), the solid particles dampen the vibration, causing a measurable shift in the resonant frequency, amplitude, or phase of the oscillation. This frequency shift is detected by a highly sensitive piezoelectric receiver, which converts the mechanical vibration into an electrical signal. The device's internal electronics process this signal, comparing it to predefined threshold values to trigger a switching output that indicates the presence (filled) or absence (empty) of the bulk solid at the detection point.

Orientation: The fork should be installed vertically (preferred) or horizontally, depending on the application. Vertical installation is recommended for maximum sensitivity, while horizontal installation is suitable for side-mounted applications in narrow vessels.
Fork Length Selection: The appropriate fork length should be chosen based on the vessel size and material properties. The standard 145 mm (6 in) fork is suitable for most applications, while the short 100 mm (4 in) fork is recommended for high-density or abrasive materials to minimize wear.
