A pressure gauge is an instrument designed to measure the pressure of a fluid, which can be either a liquid or a gas. It works by comparing the pressure of the fluid being measured with a reference pressure. This reference pressure can be atmospheric pressure (in the case of gauge pressure measurement) or another specified pressure. As a result, the value obtained from a pressure gauge is usually a relative pressure or a pressure difference.

High-Precision Measurement
Gauge pressure gauges measure the pressure relative to the local atmospheric pressure. The reading on a gauge pressure gauge indicates how much the pressure of the fluid being measured is above or below the atmospheric pressure. A positive reading means the fluid pressure is higher than atmospheric pressure, while a negative reading (in the case of vacuum - like conditions) indicates that the fluid pressure is lower than atmospheric pressure. Gauge pressure gauges are extremely common in everyday industrial applications, such as in measuring the pressure in pipelines for water, gas, or oil distribution, in air compressors, and in hydraulic systems.

Differential pressure gauges measure the difference in pressure between two points or two systems. They have two ports, one connected to each of the pressure sources whose difference is to be measured. A sensing element (such as a diaphragm) inside the gauge responds to the pressure difference across the two ports. Differential pressure gauges are used in a variety of applications, for example, in measuring the pressure drop across a filter (to determine when the filter needs to be replaced), in monitoring the performance of heat exchangers (by measuring the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet fluids), and in some flow - measurement systems where the pressure difference across an orifice plate or a Venturi tube is used to calculate the fluid flow rate.
