The Proline Promass P100 mass flowmeter operates based on the Coriolis effect, a well - established physical principle. When a fluid flows through a vibrating tube, the Coriolis force acts upon the fluid, causing a twist or deflection in the tube. The magnitude of this deflection is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid passing through the tube.
In the Promass P100, the sensor consists of one or more measuring tubes. These tubes are excited to vibrate at a natural frequency using a drive coil. As the fluid enters the vibrating tubes, the Coriolis force generated due to the interaction between the fluid's motion and the tube's vibration causes a phase shift in the vibration of the tubes. Two pick - off coils, located at specific positions on the measuring tubes, detect this phase shift. The phase shift is then processed by the transmitter electronics to calculate the mass flow rate of the fluid.
Mathematically, the Coriolis forceFc is given by the formula Fc=−2mΩ×v, where m is the mass of the fluid element, Ω is the angular velocity of the tube's vibration, andv is the velocity of the fluid relative to the tube.
